Marquee Ticker Text Screensaver
The Marquee Ticker Text screensaver scrolls your own custom message across a bank of glowing bulb-style lights, like a classic theater marquee. It is free, runs in your browser, and ESC exits.
How the Marquee Ticker Text screensaver works
The saver renders your custom text as a grid of glowing bulb-style dots, in the style of a classic marquee sign.
The message scrolls smoothly from right to left, looping continuously.
Bulbs flicker subtly for an authentic incandescent-sign feel.
The whole scene runs as pure canvas math, with no external assets.
Marquee lights and the dot-matrix look
The theatre marquee is the sign structure over the entrance of a theatre, cinema or hotel, and bulb-lit versions turn the front of a building into an advertisement. The chasing lights around the border switch on in sequence so the glow seems to travel, though no bulb moves.
Scrolling text on a sign is a separate lineage: the moving-message display, where a grid of bulbs shows letters that slide across. Each letter is drawn from a small bitmap grid of bulbs with blank columns between characters. Because the bulbs are only on or off, every glyph is a compromise, which gives the lettering its recognisable blocky character.
Motion is an illusion built from this grid. To scroll, the display shifts the whole bit pattern one column at a time and redraws, and the eye reads that as a continuous slide. The speed is just how often the shift happens. Long messages loop because the pattern is treated as a strip that wraps from the end back to the start.
A worked example
Your message scrolls fully off the left edge just as a fresh copy enters from the right, keeping the marquee always in motion.
Settings & tips

- Accent recolours the bulb glow.
- A nostalgic nod to classic theater marquee signs.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I set my own message?
- Yes — the Message setting lets you enter any custom text.
- Is a key needed?
- No — it is a pure visual animation.
- Is it free?
- Yes — free, no download, in your browser.
- Does it loop?
- Yes — the message loops continuously as it scrolls.
- Why are the letters so blocky?
- Marquee-style displays build each character from a small grid of lights that are either on or off, so curves are approximated with dots.
- Why do the bulbs around the edge seem to chase each other?
- Chase lighting switches bulbs on in a repeating sequence. Your eye follows the lit position and reads it as motion, even though the bulbs themselves do not move.
- What font style is this?
- It follows the bitmap approach of dot-matrix signs rather than a typeface with smooth outlines, so letter shapes are simplified.
