How the DOAJ New Articles screensaver works

The background pipeline polls the Directory of Open Access Journals — a curated index of open-access journals — every few minutes for new records.

Each new item eases up into its slot at the bottom of the list as it arrives.

A header shows a live/connecting indicator and the last update time.

No key is required for this key-less public endpoint.

About the Directory of Open Access Journals

The Directory of Open Access Journals, DOAJ, describes itself as a unique and extensive index of diverse open access journals. It is run by the DOAJ Foundation, a non-profit, community-governed organisation, and says it is committed to being 100% independent. It is not a publisher: it lists journals, and the articles themselves are hosted by those journals.

DOAJ states that its mission is to serve quality, peer-reviewed, open access scholarly journals, and it publishes basic criteria that a journal must meet to be included. Applications are reviewed with the help of a large group of volunteer editors, and the directory aims to cover all disciplines, languages and business models. DOAJ keeps its metadata open to everyone, which is what lets this saver show newly indexed records.

Inclusion is a signal about a journal's practices, not a review of each paper, so an article is only as sound as that journal’s own editorial process. Because the directory spans every subject and language, the stream is wide: humanities and social science can sit next to engineering or medicine, and titles come from many countries. The date shown relates to the index record, which may differ from the article’s own publication date.
