How the DEX Volume Ticker screensaver works

The saver fetches DefiLlama's real aggregated decentralized exchange volume data, with no key required.

The real 24-hour total volume across tracked DEXs is shown as a large readout.

A ranked list breaks the real total down by top individual protocols.

Readings refresh on a schedule to track real trading activity.

Counting trades on decentralized exchanges

A decentralized exchange, or DEX, lets people swap tokens directly through smart contracts instead of handing orders to a company. The numbers here come from DefiLlama, an independent analytics site. Its Dexs dashboard tracks spot and swap volume, and each protocol is measured by an adapter: a TypeScript file that collects data from endpoints or blockchain calls and returns the volume for a given time range.

Volume means the value of tokens swapped over a period. It is a different thing from total value locked, which DefiLlama defines as the value held in protocol smart contracts. A protocol can hold little capital yet turn it over many times in a day, and the reverse is also common. Swaps routed through DEX aggregators and perpetual-futures trading are tracked on separate DefiLlama dashboards rather than the Dexs one.

Reading the ranked breakdown, remember the total is a sum over the protocols DefiLlama has listed and written adapters for. A venue without an adapter is missing from the total, and coverage can differ between chains. The headline is also a trailing 24-hour window, so it moves as that window rolls forward.

A worked example

You'll see real volume shift with the broader market — busier trading days show a genuinely higher total, straight from on-chain activity, not a smoothed estimate.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a DEX?
A decentralized exchange — real on-chain smart contracts that let people trade tokens without a centralized order book.
Is a key needed?
No. DefiLlama's public API is free and key-less.
Is this every trade everywhere?
It reflects DefiLlama's real tracked DEX universe, one of the most comprehensive public trackers, though not literally every venue.
Is it free?
Yes — free, no download, in your browser.
What is the difference between volume and total value locked?
Volume counts the value of tokens swapped over a period. Total value locked, as DefiLlama defines it, is the value held in protocol smart contracts. A pool can hold a lot and trade little, or the reverse.
Why might a DEX be missing from the total?
DefiLlama measures each protocol with an adapter written for it. A DEX with no adapter is not counted, so the total covers tracked protocols only.
