How the DEV.to Trending Posts screensaver works

The background pipeline polls DEV.to — a large developer blogging community — every few minutes for new records.

Each new item eases up into its slot at the bottom of the list as it arrives.

A header shows a live/connecting indicator and the last update time.

No key is required for this key-less public endpoint.

About DEV and its trending posts

DEV, at dev.to, is a community of software developers built on Forem, the open-source software that powers it. Members publish articles tagged with topics such as javascript, webdev or career, and readers respond with reactions and comments. The mix runs from tutorials and tooling write-ups to opinion pieces and personal essays.

Forem’s public API lists articles in several ways: by popularity over the last N days with the top parameter, by state with fresh, rising or all, and by tag. Authors choose their own tags, and the API allows up to four per article, so tags are a hint about the subject rather than a strict classification.

Trending is a popularity signal, not a quality ranking. Posts that draw a strong response can outrank ones that are technically stronger but quieter. As on any open blogging platform, articles are written by community members, so quality varies and a high position is a sign of interest, not an endorsement.

A worked example

A real recent item scrolls into view with its details, then eases upward as newer ones arrive behind it.

Is a key needed?
No. This is a fully key-less public API.

The pipeline polls for new records every few minutes.
Is it free?
Yes — free, no download, in your browser.
What is DEV built on?
DEV runs on Forem, an open-source community platform whose code is publicly viewable.
Are the tags assigned by DEV?
No, authors choose them when they publish, up to four per article. They guide the reader but can be broad or occasionally off-topic.
Does trending mean the most viewed?
Not necessarily. Forem’s API offers popularity-based views such as top over recent days and a rising state, and these reflect the platform’s own measures rather than a plain view count.
