How the Codeberg Activity screensaver works

The saver reads Codeberg's Forgejo API directly in your browser — no key and no account.

Repositories being updated right now on Codeberg, the non-profit European Git host, read key-less from its Forgejo API and coloured by language..

It refreshes on a schedule, so what you see stays current.

Colours can be changed in settings; nothing is stored beyond your own browser.

Codeberg and the Forgejo software

Codeberg is a Git hosting service run by Codeberg e.V., a registered non-profit association based in Berlin, Germany. It describes itself as a community project rather than a company: members vote on platform decisions and elect its board, and anyone can use the site without being a member. For developers who prefer community ownership to a large commercial host, that structure is the appeal.

The platform runs on Forgejo, a self-hostable forge that began as a hard fork of Gitea. Its name is the Esperanto word for forge. Codeberg e.V. has backed Forgejo since 2022 and holds its domains, but Forgejo’s governance is defined by its own contributors and stays independent of Codeberg’s. The API this saver reads is therefore the Forgejo one, and any other Forgejo instance exposes a similar interface.

Each repository that has recently been updated appears with its main language, which sets the colour of its tile. Because Codeberg is smaller than the biggest hosts, the stream tends to be quieter and more varied. An update is a change to the repository’s record, so it does not always mean new code was written, and language labels come from automatic detection and can be wrong for mixed or empty repositories.
