What the FDIC directory covers

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation was created by Congress in 1933 to maintain stability and public confidence in the nation's financial system. It insures deposits at FDIC-insured banks to at least 250,000 dollars per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category. BankFind is its public directory of insured institutions, searchable by name, certificate number, location and branch.

This saver lists the biggest insured banks by total assets, along with the year each was established. Total assets means everything the bank holds, including loans, securities and cash, so size reflects the balance sheet, not profit, deposits or branch count. The founding year often reflects a long history of mergers, since the name on the door may belong to an institution formed from many predecessors.

The directory covers insured depository institutions, not the holding companies that may own them, so an asset figure belongs to the bank itself. Credit unions are not FDIC-insured; the National Credit Union Administration insures members' share accounts at federally insured credit unions. Rankings can shift as banks report new figures.

Frequently asked questions

Is this real data?
Yes — it comes from the FDIC BankFind API and is refreshed on a schedule.
Is a key needed?
No. This source is fully key-less.
Is it free?
Yes — free, no download, in your browser.
Are credit unions included?
No. Members' accounts at federally insured credit unions are insured by the National Credit Union Administration, not the FDIC.
Why use total assets to rank banks?
Total assets is a common measure of a bank's size, since it counts everything on its balance sheet.
Does the list show which bank is safest?
No. Size is not a measure of financial strength, and the directory is not a rating or recommendation.
