How the Who's Off School Right Now screensaver works
The saver reads the source described above and draws it on a canvas — no account, no tracking.
School holiday calendars across Europe, read live and key-less from OpenHolidays. Unlike public holidays these are set regionally and deliberately staggered, which is why German summer holidays start six weeks apart between Bremen and Bavaria.
It refreshes on a schedule, so what you see stays current.
Colours and any options can be changed in settings; nothing is stored beyond your own browser.
Why school holidays differ by region
Public holidays are usually set nationally, but school holidays are different. Many countries leave the dates to regions, and some deliberately stagger them. OpenHolidays is a free, open-source REST API for public and school holidays that covers more than 35 countries and their administrative subdivisions, and needs no API key.
Germany is the clearest case: its sixteen states set their own summer holidays, coordinated through the Kultusministerkonferenz on a rolling system so the break does not start everywhere at once. Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg sit outside that rotation and start late, which the KMK links to their traditional Whitsun holidays. France divides its schools into three zones, A, B and C, whose winter and spring breaks are staggered, while the All Saints, Christmas and summer breaks are common to all zones.
Each row gives a region, a start and end date and a name. Dates are those published by the authorities and can be amended, so check them against the official source before making travel plans.
