Why screens say No Signal

A monitor or television shows a No Signal message when it detects no usable video on the input it is listening to. Common causes are mundane: a loose or unplugged cable, the wrong input selected, a source device that is asleep or switched off, or an output mode the display cannot handle. The wording, typeface and colours of the message are chosen by each manufacturer, so the same fault looks different on different brands.

The static behind such a message nods to older analog television. A set tuned to a channel with no broadcast shows random dots, often called snow, produced by electronic noise and radiated electromagnetic noise picked up by the antenna, plus thermal noise from the receiver’s own first amplifying stage. Many modern displays replace that with a synthetic noise pattern, a plain colour or a text card.
