How the Flathub Releases screensaver works

The saver reads the source described above and draws it on a canvas — no account, no tracking.

Linux desktop apps just published or updated on Flathub, gathered key-less by the pipeline. Distinct from the site's Homebrew and Debian popularity savers: those rank what people already installed, this is the release stream, so apps reappear as they ship.

It refreshes on a schedule, so what you see stays current.

Colours and any options can be changed in settings; nothing is stored beyond your own browser.

Reading the Flathub update stream

Flathub is the main distribution point for Flatpak applications, a packaging format that runs Linux desktop software in a sandbox independent of the host distribution. Developers or volunteers submit a build manifest, and Flathub builds and publishes the application so it can be installed on many distributions from one source. Submissions are reviewed case by case.

Flathub hosts proprietary applications as well as free software, so appearing in the stream says nothing about whether an app is open source. Apps whose developer has proven control of the app ID show a verified checkmark on the store; some apps are published by community members or third parties instead and are not eligible for verification.

An update here may be a new feature release, a security fix or merely a rebuild against a newer runtime, so a high position in the list says nothing about how significant the change is. Brand-new apps are simply new, not necessarily popular, and a recent update says nothing about how many people use an app.

Settings & tips

Frequently asked questions

Is this real data?
Yes — it comes from the source named on this page and is refreshed on a schedule.
Is a key needed?
No. This source is fully key-less.
Is it free?
Yes — free, no download, in your browser.
What is a Flatpak runtime?
It is a shared set of base libraries that sandboxed Flatpak apps build against, so a rebuild against a newer runtime can cause an app to be republished without any change to the app itself.
Are all these apps open source?
No. Flathub accepts both free-software and proprietary applications, so check the licence shown for the app.
What does the verified checkmark mean?
The developer has proven control of the app ID. Apps published by community members or third parties cannot be verified.
