How the Is Finnish Rail On Time screensaver works
The saver reads the source described above and draws it on a canvas — no account, no tracking.
Live punctuality across the main Finnish stations, read key-less from Fintraffic's Digitraffic API. Not a departures board: it asks the whole network at once and buckets every scheduled stop by how late it is, which most of the time is not at all.
It refreshes on a schedule, so what you see stays current.
Colours and any options can be changed in settings; nothing is stored beyond your own browser.
Digitraffic and the punctuality of Finnish trains
Fintraffic is a wholly state-owned Finnish company, steered by the Ministry of Transport and Communications, that handles traffic management across rail, road and maritime traffic, plus air navigation services. Its Digitraffic service publishes open data on traffic in Finland. For railways it provides data on trains operating in Finland, including timetables, delays, train locations and train composition. That is the kind of data this saver reads.
Rather than showing a departure board, the saver takes all scheduled stops across the main stations and sorts them by how far the actual time departs from the timetable. A stop that is on time and one that is a few minutes behind land in different groups, so the shape of the chart gives a quick picture of how the whole network is doing at this moment. When most stops fall into the on-time bucket, the chart looks lopsided, and that is the usual result.
Several caveats apply. A snapshot taken at one time of day will differ from one at rush hour. Winter weather, track work and other disruption can each shift the picture, and a bucketed summary of lateness cannot show why a train is late. It describes the network as a whole and is not a tool for planning an individual journey.
