Deposited Today Screensaver
The Deposited Today screensaver shows research outputs published to Figshare in the last day, gathered key-less by the pipeline. Figshare takes what never fits in a journal, and a repository whose top category is "dataset" says a lot about modern research output. It's free, runs in your browser, and ESC exits.
How the Deposited Today screensaver works
The saver reads the source described above and draws it on a canvas — no account, no tracking.
Research outputs published to Figshare in the last day, gathered key-less by the pipeline. Figshare takes what never fits in a journal, and a repository whose top category is "dataset" says a lot about modern research output.
It refreshes on a schedule, so what you see stays current.
Colours and any options can be changed in settings; nothing is stored beyond your own browser.
What gets deposited on Figshare
Figshare is an online repository where researchers can preserve and share outputs such as figures, datasets, images, videos, posters and code. Mark Hahnel launched it in January 2011, and it has been supported by Digital Science since a January 2012 relaunch. A hosted service launched in 2013 lets institutions run their own repositories on it. Items are assigned a DOI, so they can be cited like a paper.
The feed shows deposits from the last day. The kind of each item is the type chosen on upload, such as dataset, figure, media or poster; the selectable item types are configured per institution, so the mix varies between repositories. Depositors write their own titles and descriptions.
Two things are worth keeping in mind. Figshare is a place to deposit and share outputs rather than a peer-review venue, so an item is a record that someone deposited something, not a verified result. And volume is lumpy: a single institution can deposit a large batch in a day, which can make one subject area dominate the list.
A worked example
Research outputs published to Figshare in the last day, gathered key-less by the pipeline. Figshare takes what never fits in a journal, and a repository whose top category is "dataset" says a lot about modern research output.

Frequently asked questions
- Is this real data?
- Yes — it comes from the source named on this page and is refreshed on a schedule.
- Is a key needed?
- No. This source is fully key-less.
- Is it free?
- Yes, and it runs entirely in your browser.
- What can be deposited on Figshare?
- Research outputs such as figures, datasets, images, videos, posters and code.
- Are Figshare items peer reviewed?
- Figshare is a repository for sharing outputs, not a peer-review venue, so treat an item as a deposit rather than a verified result.
- Why does one topic sometimes dominate?
- A single institution can deposit a large batch at once, and since the feed shows recent items, that batch can fill the screen.
