About TheCocktailDB

TheCocktailDB is a free drinks database with a JSON API, built in 2015 and described by its maker as a free data source for drinks online. It began on the Kodi forums as a way to browse cocktail recipes on a television, and it has since been used in apps, a Discord chatbot, a smartwatch app and university programming courses. It is a sister site of TheMealDB, TheSportsDB and TheAudioDB.

A recipe card here follows the structure of the data: a drink name, a category, the glass it is traditionally served in, a list of ingredients each with a measure, and written method steps. Glassware matters more than it seems, since a coupe, a highball and a rocks glass imply different dilution and ice. Measures are written as text rather than numbers, so you may see ounces, centilitres, dashes or simply a splash.

The API also lets developers filter drinks by whether they are alcoholic, by category and by glass type, which is how a card can say which kind of drink it shows. Classic cocktails often exist in several versions with different ratios, so treat a card as one documented take rather than an authoritative recipe, and note that nothing here is a statement about serving sizes or drinking.

Frequently asked questions

Is this real data?
Yes — it comes from TheCocktailDB and is refreshed on a schedule.
Is a key needed?
No. This source is fully key-less.
Is it free?
Yes — free, no download, in your browser.
Why do measures vary in format?
Measures are stored as text rather than fixed units, so one recipe may use ounces, another centilitres, and another a vague amount like a dash.
Is this the official recipe for each cocktail?
No. It is a documented version from an online database, and many classic drinks have several accepted variations.
