Bitcoin Dominance Chart Screensaver
The Bitcoin Dominance Chart screensaver shows Bitcoin's real live share of total crypto market capitalization, with a session trend line, drawn key-less from CoinGecko. It's free, runs in your browser, and ESC exits.
How the Bitcoin Dominance Chart screensaver works
The saver fetches real current global crypto market data from CoinGecko, with no key required.
Bitcoin's real percentage share of the total market cap is shown as a large readout.
A trend line builds up over your session, tracking how dominance moves while you watch.
Readings refresh on a schedule to track real market shifts.
Reading Bitcoin's share of the crypto market
Bitcoin dominance is a ratio: Bitcoin’s market capitalisation divided by the total market capitalisation of the cryptocurrencies a data provider tracks, expressed as a percentage. Market capitalisation is price multiplied by circulating supply, so dominance shifts whenever Bitcoin’s price moves relative to everything else, not only when money flows in or out of it.
The figure depends on what is counted in the denominator. CoinGecko’s global total includes stablecoins and excludes wrapped, bridged and staked tokens, which it leaves out to avoid double-counting value. Other trackers list different tokens and estimate supply differently, so their dominance numbers will not match CoinGecko’s exactly, and quoting the figure without naming its source says little.
Because the denominator covers every tracked coin, a rise in dominance can reflect altcoin prices falling rather than Bitcoin rising. Dominance is a descriptive statistic, not a forecast, and it says nothing about whether any asset is a good or bad holding. The trend line on screen only covers the time you have been watching, so it shows short-run drift rather than a long history.
A worked example
During an altcoin rally you'll see the real dominance figure drift down — Bitcoin's share shrinking as other coins outgrow it, a genuine market shift, not a scripted animation.
Settings & tips
- Accent recolours the trend line.
- The session trend builds from when you open the saver, not full history.
- Dominance is a share of market cap, not a price movement on its own.
Frequently asked questions
- What is Bitcoin dominance?
- The real percentage of total crypto market capitalization that Bitcoin alone represents — a widely watched market-structure metric.
- Is a key needed?
- No. CoinGecko's public API is free and key-less.
- Does the trend show years of history?
- No — it's a real live session trend from when you started watching, not a historical archive.
- Is it free?
- Yes — free, no download, in your browser.
- Why can dominance rise when Bitcoin's price is falling?
- Because it is a ratio. If other coins fall faster than Bitcoin, Bitcoin's slice of the total grows even though its own price dropped.
- Do stablecoins count towards the total?
- It depends on the provider, which is one reason dominance figures differ between sites. CoinGecko's global market cap includes stablecoins, so they enlarge the denominator and pull Bitcoin's percentage down.
- Is high dominance good or bad?
- It is neither; it only describes how market value is distributed. The saver reports the ratio and gives no view on what it implies for any investment.
