Inside the Open Trivia Database
The Open Trivia Database is a free, user-contributed bank of quiz questions that anyone can browse or add to through its submission page. The site is created and maintained by Pixeltail Games LLC, and its content is offered under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 licence. Questions span categories such as General Knowledge, Science & Nature, History, Geography, Sports, Mythology and several entertainment groups including Film, Books and Video Games.
Each question carries a category, a difficulty of easy, medium or hard, and a type, either multiple choice or true/false. Submitted questions have a status of pending, verified or rejected, and the database keeps counts for each. By default the service returns text with HTML character codes, so the saver has to decode symbols such as quotation marks and ampersands before display; the API also offers URL and Base64 encodings.
Because the entries are volunteer-written, a database like this can contain mistakes, ambiguous wording and questions whose answers have changed since they were written. Treat a reveal as the database’s answer, not a final authority. The pause before the answer appears is a design choice so the question can be considered.
