About MedlinePlus
MedlinePlus is a service of the US National Library of Medicine, which is part of the National Institutes of Health. It offers plain-language health information in English and Spanish, and describes its Health Topics collection as covering over 1000 diseases, illnesses, health conditions and wellness issues.
Topics can be browsed several ways: an A-Z index, by body location or system, by type of disorder or condition, by diagnosis and therapy, by demographic group, and under health and wellness. A topic page opens with a summary that explains in general terms what a condition is, how it is often caused and how it is commonly diagnosed and treated. The summaries are short by design, so they leave out detail clinicians would want.
MedlinePlus also publishes its topic data for developers as a web service. Its English and Spanish topic databases are searched separately, and the data is updated daily, Tuesday through Saturday. The display here is a rotating sample, and it is general reference material, not medical advice or diagnosis. If you have a health concern, ask a qualified health professional.
