How the Guardian Newsroom screensaver works

The saver reads the source described above and draws it on a canvas — no account, no tracking.

The Guardian's newest articles across every section from their Open Platform API. The key defaults to the shared test key the Guardian publishes for trying the platform, which is rate-limited — their terms ask you to register your own free key in settings.

It refreshes on a schedule, so what you see stays current.

Colours and any options can be changed in settings; nothing is stored beyond your own browser.

The Guardian's Open Platform and its newsroom map

The Guardian is a British news organisation. It is part of Guardian Media Group, which is owned by the Scott Trust Limited, a body set up in 1936 to secure the financial and editorial independence of the paper. Alongside its website it runs the Open Platform, a content API that lets developers search and retrieve its published journalism and the metadata that describes each piece.

What you see here reflects how the API organises content. Articles are grouped into sections, such as world news, sport or culture, and each one carries a headline and a publication date. The Guardian also publishes separate editions: UK, US, Australia, international and, since 2023, Europe. The API exposes editions and sections as things you can query, so a single feed can span material aimed at quite different audiences.

A feed of the newest articles is a view of publishing activity, not of importance. A section that publishes many items will fill more of the list, while a major investigation may appear just once. What you see is a moment-in-time snapshot, and for the full article and its context you need to visit the Guardian itself.

Settings & tips

Frequently asked questions

Is this real data?
Yes — it comes from the source named on this page and is refreshed on a schedule.
Is a key needed?
A free key is used; the default works for trying it out and you can paste your own in settings.
Is it free?
Yes — free, no download, in your browser.
What is a content API?
It is a programme interface that lets software request articles and their metadata directly, instead of scraping a web page designed for people.
How do I tell what kind of article I am looking at?
Use the section label. The Guardian organises its output into sections, so the section name shows whether an item belongs to news, sport, culture or another area.
Why does the same API cover different countries?
The Guardian publishes UK, US, Australia, international and Europe editions, and the Open Platform lets developers query content by edition and section.
