What the eCFR is and how amendment dates work
The Code of Federal Regulations is the codification of the general and permanent rules of US federal agencies, arranged in fifty titles by subject. The eCFR is the continuously updated electronic version, maintained by the Office of the Federal Register, and the OFR says it updates the eCFR daily so that it is generally current within two business days.
The official print CFR works differently: each volume is revised once a year and issued quarterly, with different groups of titles updated at different points of the year. The OFR describes the eCFR as an unofficial editorial compilation of CFR material and Federal Register amendments, which does not provide legal notice until the Administrative Committee of the Federal Register grants it official status. People relying on it for legal research are told to verify against the official CFR and the Federal Register.
This board uses the eCFR API to find when each title was last amended and ranks the titles by how long ago that was. Age is only a rough signal. A long gap can mean a settled body of rules that needs no change, as easily as neglect, and the date reflects the text of the code, not enforcement or court decisions.
